NAPHL began more than 20 years ago as the Townsville Division of General Practice and since then has undergone significant change.  Under the Townsville Division of General Practice, the organisation was funded by the Federal Government to provide support to the GP community. We worked with GPs to identify and address gaps in inadequate health services.

In 2006 the organisation expanded to become the Townsville General Practice Network where we supported not only GPs, but the entire practice including practice managers and nurses. At this time the organisation also worked closely with the Townsville Hospital and Health Service to improve the linkage between primary and secondary care.

In 2008 we became the lead agency for headspace Mackay and headspace Townsville before the organisation became Townsville Mackay Medicare Local (TMML) in 2010. Under this change the organisation combined with the Mackay Division of General Practice. The organisation was funded by the Federal Government to conduct community engagement to identify gaps in the delivery of health services. At this time TMML was also starting to provide services such as the Outreach Allied Health Program while headspace was also being expanded.

In 2016 the organisation became Northern Australia Primary Health Limited which it is still known as today. NAPHL now delivers a range of mental health, indigenous and allied health services in the community funded by the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network and the Federal Government. To support our work we also provide private services with any profits being invested back into the organisation to further advance our mission.
