Stop using hot weather to skip workouts Yes, it’s hot. Every second person you see is complaining about the humidity. The Bureau of Meteorology says our region is officially in a heatwave. But this shouldn’t be an excuse to skip a workout! NAPHL Health Hub Exercise Physiologist Aric Visentin (pictured) wants people to stop using the heatwave as an excuse to not workout. “Nice try. But don’t let this heat control you. Don’t use this as an excuse to skip a workout,” Aric said. “There are many strategies to keep your body cool during this heatwave, rather than just skipping a routine.” “If you have a health condition, it’s always a good idea to seek advice about exercising in hot weather from a trained professional like your GP or an Exercise Physiologist. “If you’re otherwise healthy, there are ways you can you still exercise safely in this heat.” If this sounds like you, here’s Aric’s top tips for safely and comfortably working out when the weather is hot: Exercise in the morning or afternoon when it is cooler. You don’t have to complete a 30 minute session all in the one go. Split this up into 10 minute intervals and complete throughout your day. Ensure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and cool. Rest: rest is very important especially in this weather. Check the weather forecast before heading out. Wear loose fitting clothing to help your body cool down. We want our body heat to be able to escape with ease. If outside is still too hot, you can exercise inside in many ways. If exercising outside, find a shady tree or an undercover area. Finding places where there is a nice cool breeze is a good idea as well (e.g beach, parks) Are you looking for advice about exercising safely with a health condition? Aric is qualified to support people with medical conditions through exercise. He’s more than happy to help you exercise safely through this heat. Call 4722 8750 to book in today.
